儘管日本民眾對V-22魚鷹(Osprey)傾斜旋翼機的安全性感到疑慮，但是日本防衛省為了防衛西南諸島，打算引進魚鷹運輸機。

根據《讀賣新聞》報導，為了防衛釣魚台等離島，防衛省正積極成立一支可擔當離島防衛任務的水陸兩棲部隊。這支兩棲部隊將以魚鷹機為主要運輸載具，預計2015年開始採購15架魚鷹機。

不過由於每架魚鷹機價格高達100億日圓(約30.7億元新台幣)，加上日本民眾對魚鷹機的安全有疑慮，因此日本政府內部對採購V-22慎重看待，防衛省將在2014年度預算申請中撥出1億日元，作為導入魚鷹機的調查費用。

今年6月的美日聯合奪島演習中，美國海軍MV-22魚鷹機首次降落在日本海上自衛隊「日向號」直升機驅逐艦上；10月份的美日聯合軍演中，更將利用魚鷹機舉行假想發生南海海槽大地震的聯合防災演練。

為了強化離島防衛能力，日本除了打算引進魚鷹機之外，更早已購入4輛AAV-7兩棲戰車，未來還將引進更先進的兩棲作戰車輛。 (接下一頁)
